NIH Backs NAMS – Now We Must Guard Against Co-optation

Earlier this week, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) – the world’s largest funder of animal research – announced a policy shift: going forward, all NIH grant applicants will be required to “consider” new approach methodologies (“NAMS”).

We must both commend the NIH’s espoused intent and guard against the animal research industry’s efforts to package NAMS alongside animal research – against the industry being allowed to treat NAMS as supportive tools rather than directives for change and disruptors of exploitation. 📰 Full Story →


E.P.A. Employees Are Invited to Adopt Soon-to-Be Homeless Lab Rats

“[Rats and zebra fish] have long been used at the E.P.A.[‘s research campus in North Carolina] to test the toxicity of chemicals. But as the E.P.A. shuts down its research arm as part of the Trump administration’s deep cuts to government scientific work, the animals need new homes. So employees . . . have set up an adoption plan . . . Staff members can take home the rats and fish and keep them at pets.”

“‘Adopt love. Save a life,’ read a poster displayed on campus last week….”

Scientists fear impact as senators back end to primate research

“Dutch university hospitals and scientific organisations have raised the alarm over a parliamentary decision to phase out government funding for medical research involving primates . . . Last week, a majority in the Tweede Kamer unexpectedly backed a proposal from the pro-animal PvdD to gradually withdraw €12.5 million in annual subsidies from the Biomedical Primate Research Centre (BPRC) in Rijswijk . . . The change instructs the education ministry to redirect the funding towards alternative research methods and says the subsidy must be fully withdrawn by 2030.”

“The BPRC is the largest facility of its kind in Europe. It is involved in research on infectious diseases such as malaria and Covid, and on neurological conditions including Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. Each year, a maximum of 150 monkeys may be used in studies.”  📰 Full Story →

Delhi High Court Bars Private Lab from Animal Testing Over Cruelty Allegations

“The Delhi High Court has restrained Hyderabad-based Palamur Biosciences Pvt Ltd from conducting animal testing, following serious allegations of cruelty and neglect at its research facility. The court found merit in the claims raised by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India and ordered urgent remedial steps to improve the condition of animals.”
