Making an Impact for Animals in Labs

The Rise for Animals Team, July 16, 2024

As we reflect on some of the incredible, recent progress made for animals in laboratories, we’re filled with gratitude for your unwavering support. You — one among our dedicated champions of change — have made it possible to achieve remarkable victories for animals exploited in research and testing.

From Lab to Lap: Teddy & Ellie’s Rescue Story

Teddy and Ellie, two sweet beagles, endured seemingly endless days of confinement and uncertainty in their respective research and breeding facilities. But thanks to the kindness of Katie and JT Koser, these resilient pups found a loving home where they now play, explore, and enjoy the freedom they were denied for so long. Their heartwarming rescue stories remind us of the profound impact that compassion and dedication has on the lives of animals — even the ones we cannot see behind windowless laboratory walls.

Monkeys Spared! You Helped Prevent $30M in Primate Experiments

Late last year, we asked you — and all our spirited supporters — to contact your members of Congress in opposition to the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) request for an additional $30 million in funding for nonhuman primate experimentation. Over 22,000 of you took action… and you did it!

At the end of March, the federal government’s 2024 budget was finalized; thankfully, it excluded the aforementioned $30 million dollars intended to fund even more monkey research and breeding.

Kitten Experiments Finally Over

You may remember us urging you to take action against a laboratory at the University of California-Irvine, where researchers were purchasing healthy kittens, drugging them, and placing electrodes under their eyes, near their ears, and on their tender whiskers to stimulate nerve impulses. This experiment was awful — but we have good news to share: it’s over now!

This unthinkably cruel experiment’s funding recently expired. It’s cause for celebration on many fronts — the end of this experiment means countless cats are saved from excruciating lives of confinement, isolation, confusion, and pain. Thank you for taking action for these innocent felines.

Ethical Science on the Rise

Like you, we are thrilled to see continued advancements in the world of non-animal research. Researchers are working on modern, effective, human-relevant methodologies instead of unethical animal-based research. Check out these recent developments all over the news:

  • Scientists at Chalmers University of Technology have developed a method using artificial intelligence (AI) to assess the toxicity of substances based on their chemical structure.
  • XCellR8 has developed a method to replicate human skin cells, avoiding animal testing in cosmetic and chemical safety assessments.
  • Insilico Medicine claims to have developed the first AI-driven drug, currently undergoing testing for treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
  • ImmuONE has developed a 3D model of a human lung to test inhaled medicines and products, reducing the need for animal testing.
  • Carcinotech has developed 3D printed tumors, resulting in physiologically relevant, human-based malignant tissues for use in cancer research.

Your support helps to free animals from labs. Your dedication is sparking change and driving our life-saving movement forward.

Yet, even as we celebrate these achievements, we also acknowledge the challenges ahead. The plight of animals in laboratories remains urgent, and we need your continued support to ensure their protection. Together, we can push boundaries, challenge the status quo, and fight for a future where no animal is subjected to experimentation.

Thank you for being a champion of change. Your generosity, compassion, and unwavering dedication fuel the very heart of our mission.

We can’t save animals and support ethical science without you.
