Former “Lab Chimps” Are Thriving in Retirement

Rise for Animals, August 13, 2025

This spring, the last chimpanzees from the Alamogordo Primate Facility finally arrived at Chimp Haven, the sanctuary they always deserved.

Thanks to your advocacy and generosity, Rise for Animals has been able to help fund these chimps’ happy new lives.

Now, just a few short months after our last update, the chimps are settled in, making friends, and experiencing the kinds of freedoms they were denied for decades.

Some, like 51-year-old Al and 54-year-old Kamaka, had only ever lived with male chimpanzees before their rescue. Now, they’ve been welcomed into a lively group led by strong and charismatic females: Wotoni, Roxanne, and Zoe. The introductions have gone beautifully, with Al and Kamaka forming close bonds that prove it’s never too late to find your people (or, in this case, your chimps).

Pearl Bug, 54, and Sherril, 53, have wasted no time embracing sanctuary life. From the moment they stepped into their new play yard, they made themselves at home, lounging in the grass and soaking up the sun.

As the only diabetic chimpanzees at the sanctuary, Pearl Bug and Sherril have been quick learners in their glucose training sessions. Pearl Bug may be tiny but her fiery spirit keeps things lively, while Sherril prefers a slow-and-steady approach — together, they’re the perfect pair who prove opposites attract.

Thadeus, 42, may be considered an “oldie” by chimp standards, but he’s the youngest in his group of boys, and the life of the party. Known for his goofy antics and sweet “play face,” Thadeus has made a name for himself with games of tug-of-war (“with bananas!”) and playful interactions with his human caregivers. He’s still warming up to the feel of grass under his feet, but he’s courageously exploring the sanctuary structures like a pro.

“All of us at Chimp Haven are so very grateful for the generous support Rise for Animals has provided to welcome home the remaining chimps from the Alamogordo Primate Facility to sanctuary earlier this year.”

Currently, construction is underway on the new living spaces that will become the Alamogordo chimps’ permanent homes. In the meantime, they are already experiencing the joy, safety, and companionship of sanctuary life — thanks to you.

Your voice helped win their freedom. Your support helped make their new lives possible. And now, every day, these resilient survivors are proving that it’s never too late for hope and healing and happiness.
