Living the Sweet Life After Labs

Rise for Animals, July 30, 2025

There’s nothing sweeter than watermelon on a hot day — except, perhaps, the sight of pigs who were once exploited in experiments, now joyfully devouring it in the sunny outdoors.

At New Life Animal Sanctuary in southern California, a recent “Watermelon Smash” party celebrated the 10-year rescue-versary of a group of very special pigs they lovingly refer to as their “Gottingen girls”.

These pigs were once the property of a lab. But a decade ago, thanks to the compassionate efforts of New Life, they were given a chance to live the rest of their lives as all deserve: With freedom. And love. And lots of snacks!

At Rise for Animals, we’re proud to support the work of New Life, whose motto “Life After Labs” captures the spirit and hope we fight for every day — until all animals are free from labs.

As you can see in the video above, theirs isn’t just a story of survival. It’s a story of joy. Of recovery. Of pigs finally allowed to just be pigs.
